What is Whois

  • Whois is a query and response protocol that is widely used for querying databases that store the registered users of an Internet resource, such as a domain name.
  • Anyone who needs to know who is behind a website domain name can make a request for that information via Whois.
      Whois Database
      • The whois database contains contact and registration information for every domain registered with a particular registrar.
      • Whois databases are maintained by individual registrars and not by the central registry.
      • By searching it you can discover a number of things about the domain’s ownership and registration.
        Whois Lookup

          • In below figure shows search box and type any domain name in the box and click on search.
            • Ofter searching it will display the all the information of domain and details of admin.
              Whois Privacy
              • With this privacy your details won’t be displayed, instead generic information will be listed, preventing malicious spammers and scammers harvesting your details.
              • We hide contact names, phone numbers, email and post addresses. Any inquiries will still be sent to your email address however for genuine inquiries.

                History
                • Whois was standardized in the early 1980s to look up domains, people and other resources related to domain and number registrations.
                • As all registration was done by one organization at that time, one centralized server was used for Whois queries. This made looking up such information very easy.
