Workgroup vs Domain

What is Workgroup

• Workgroup is also called Peer to Peer Network. Computer can be used in two ways Standalone device and Network device.
• Every computer acts as a client and a server and files are shared on each PC. Administration & Security must be managed on each PC.

Advantages

• Easy setup.
• No extra investment on server.
• No network administrator required.

Disadvantages

• Additional load on computer, because of resources sharing.
• Lack of central security.
• Lack of central managements.

What is Domain

• Domain is also called Client Server. A Server is added to the Network.
• Shared data can be easily backup up on the server machine. Administration & Security is managed in one location.

Advantages

• Strong central security.
• Ability to share expensive equipment's.
• Optimized dedicated server, which are faster than pears at sharing network resources.

Disadvantages

• Expensive dedicated server hardware required for server.
• Expensive network operating system software and clients licenses.
• Dedicated network administrator required.
